A'o'K Bookkeeping

About us

Anne or Karen. That is where the name came from.

A’o’K Bookkeeping started in 2001 on a simple promise: one of us would be your personal bookkeeper, and you would always know which one. Twenty five years later the team has grown into a group of specialists. The promise has not changed.

We are not librarians

That is our own phrase and we mean it kindly. A lot of bookkeeping is presented as filing: a tidy shelf, everything in order, nobody reading any of it. We are excessively interested in expenses, income and budgets, and we would rather tell you something useful about your numbers than hand you a neat pile of them.

The style is no nonsense and straight to the point. If something is a problem we will say so. If a subscription is not earning its keep, or a job type is running at half the margin of the other one, you will hear about it in the quarterly report rather than in a year's time from your accountant.

We treat your business like it is our own

It is the line we have used for a long time because it is the actual test we apply. Would we pay this bill early? Would we let this debtor run to ninety days? Would we accept this margin? Bookkeeping done at arm's length is data entry. Bookkeeping done properly is somebody paying attention on your behalf.

Nothing goes offshore

Your books are done in house in Melbourne by our own team. We say it plainly because it is one of the main reasons businesses move to us, particularly after an experience where the person doing the work was three time zones away and the questions took a week. Where a client's payroll suits being outsourced we will arrange that and tell you exactly who is doing what.

Registered, insured, and accountable

We are registered BAS agents with the Tax Practitioners Board, registration 24668985. That is a legal registration with qualification, experience, insurance and conduct requirements behind it, and it can be checked publicly. It means we can prepare and lodge your activity statements and deal with the ATO on your behalf.

We are members of the Australian Bookkeepers Association, and we work in Xero, MYOB, QuickBooks Online, where we hold ProAdvisor certification, and Reckon.

Why the jelly beans

Bookkeepers get called bookies, which we are not, and bean counters, which we cheerfully are. So the jelly bean is ours. Your paperwork arrives as a bucket of mixed beans. The job is sorting it into matching groups until the picture makes sense. It has been our theme for years and it is the one part of our branding nobody has ever asked us to explain twice.

What you get

A named bookkeeper who knows your business.

You are not handed around. You get one of us, backed by specialists in payroll, compliance and clean up work when your job needs them.
